DRUMS OF THE ISLANDS - "POLYNESIAN PERCUSSION"
Air Date 8/15/08

Full Broadcast

This time, we'll remember that Drums have been found in nearly every culture in the world, and have existed since before 6,000 B.C.! Drums have had ceremonial, sacred, & symbolic associations! The original Hawaiian percussion were the ipu (gourd) and the pahu (drum), which created the rhythm patterns for the hula. After contact, visitors to Hawaii's shores brought countless percussion instruments with them, from standard concert drum sets, to bongo and congo drums. Join us as we take the pulse of Paradise through Polynesian percussion, South Seas syncopation, and Territorial traps!
HAWAIIAN VIBRAPHONE MELE - "GOOD HAWAIIAN VIBES"
Air Date 8/8/08

Full Broadcast

This time, we'll remember that the vibraphone was invented in the early years of the 20th century! A vibraphone is a percussion instrument resembling the zylophone but having metal bars and motor driven resonators for sustaining the tone and producing a vibrato! The vibraphone is played by striking the metal bars with mallets of varying hardness. The player can also depress a sustain pedal, which allows the notes to ring until the pedal is lifted again. Hawaiian music first embraced the vibraphone in the 1940s, and it soon became a favorite both live and on recordings.
